Whole Grains are Health Protective
When it comes to wheat-based products, including bread, crackers, pasta, tortillas, bagels, and cereal, look for the word whole on the label. In terms of cereals, oatmeal, shredded wheat, and even Cheerios, Wheaties, and Nutrigrain are good choices. Although All-Bran is not made from whole grain, it is loaded with bran and therefore still considered a nutritious food.

Cancer Prevention with Nutrition

Research has shown there is a powerful connection between nutrition and cancer. We can’t change the genetic structure we were born with, and our genetic makeup is certainly a factor in whether each of us will develop cancer.

We can, however, modify the expression of our genes. Even if you had the bad luck to inherit genes predisposing you to cancer, if you eat a healthy diet and practice other healthy lifestyle habits, thereby supercharging your detoxification system, you will dramatically decrease your risk of developing cancer.

Our bodies have a wonderful natural process of detoxification. One of the most important parts of this process is called methylation.

Methylation produces an amino acid which reverses DNA damage by free radicals. The liver, the major detoxification organ, depends on methylation to perform many enzymatic reactions required to detoxify drugs and foreign chemicals. When the methylation process is prevented from occurring normally, DNA damage occurs and cancer genes are free to activate. When we overwhelm our detoxification system with carcinogens in our diet, its ability to counteract toxins from all sources is greatly lessened.

At ACRCF we recommend a diet based on vegetables and fruits. To boost your detoxification system, eat 4-10 servings of vegetables and 3-6 servings of fruit a day. Try to eat only whole grains—for example, whole wheat breads, pastas, and tortillas, and brown or wild rice, and cereals such as oatmeal and granola. Legumes, nuts and seeds should be included daily in a healthy diet.

For protein, we recommend cold-water fish; and dairy products or other calcium-rich foods. Also free-range poultry or eggs, on an occasional basis, and we recommend that beef, pork or wild game should be consumed only a couple of times a week. It is no coincidence that this diet resembles the way our ancestors ate. These are the foods the human body was designed to eat.
